We asked users what they were using to get around the "cluttered automation desktop" we hear about so often.  We asked about their project management, integration, business process, time and account tracking, and security.

project management

"We do a lot of pointless meetings."
"I have MSProject resident on my machine and I don't use it. MS Project doesn't work for me due to its complexity and lack of alignment for what I do."
"Our project mgmt is only done if we are working with or coordinating with other departments. We don't need to do project management tool if we are working within our own department."
"If the Parts Manager decides to change a meter we never know about it."
"I use Microsoft Binder for task tracking, revision control, etc."
"I use excel and MSproject for project management tools. When we share reports with our customers, versions are a problem. Our customers are not usually up to date with their software. In our work environment, certain people are tasked with keeping track of the versioning."
"For project management we manage all of our project status through one-line descriptions for the project by phase. We organize each of these in folders by project "phase"."

integration

"We're storing reusable content on an intranet today. This would have to be on the intranet and have the ability to see who has checked in/out content."
"Our company has a numbering system for billing based on task groups (electrical, control) these task groups have sub-numbers such as PLC Programming or Creating an I/O list. These numbers are stored in a Unix-based MRP system."

process

"Our project teams meet on a weekly basis."
"The first thing we do is identify long lead items. We do this at their kickoff meeting."
"We have two options when we start a project, we take the drawings from a customer, or we start fresh."
"There is no official validation during the process. We need to more closely track risks and dependencies. Post project analysis; We also need the ability to go back and see where thing went wrong."
One user said that PLC 5 platform was great for reuse. He thinks that newer (Client) products are not as user-friendly in this aspect. Everyone in his office prefers AI because you have to go between mouse and keyboard in the new Logic Editors.  The user said it's about the same ROM to change from PLC5 to ControlLogix as it is to Siemens or other controllers.

time/account tracking

"We mainly bill off of I/O count. How we price a job:
o Price by I/O Count
o Programming time by count
o Complexity factor 1-5 (We have to consider what pre-existing controllers we have to interface to and determine the difficulty.)"

security

Some users said that they could control what folders and files their people had access to.  Others said anyone can get to any file.
"We store project data depending on the project. Sometimes we store it by the customer, sometimes we store by the program."
