Heuristics and Evaluations

UI review - 02.21.2001  Usability Report 6.2001  UI Review - 08.15.2001  Usability Report 10.2001

Here are a few of my many heuristic reviews and usability reports.  It involves a client product I became involved with late in development.  Check out my  Products page to see how a little usability went a long way -- improving this interface so much that clients named it #1 in usability over all competitor tools.

Groperz.com Prototype Evaluation

Everlast Climbing Industries carries Groperz wall climbing products.  A colleague in one of my evaluation classes was an avid climber and happened to have a relationship with this company.  So while we were at DePaul, we worked on developing a prototype for their website.  My team was responsible for the usability testing and recommendations.  I wrote this report in November 1998.

Research & Miscellaneous Works

Mental Models and Usability

In November of 1999, I collaborated with Mary Jo Davidson and Julie Weltz to write this research paper for a graduate level learning and memory cognitive psychology class.  It is a good overview of theories on mental models and usability.  An interesting discussion about traditional boundaries between the HCI and Cognitive Psychology domains is included.

Human-Computer Interaction Practitioners' Professional Standards

Thanks to inspiration from The Independent Writers of Chicago, I'm in the midst of developing a professional standards document for entrepreneurial HCI engineers.  I've found this to be valuable (typically used in a proposals) for setting expectations and good communication at the outset of any independent work.  The local CHI group is working with me to provide this tool to members.  It's a work in progress, so any feedback or input would be much appreciated. . .
